The new Bone Quality
Test (BQT®) uses a
fingernail sample and a Raman laser system to detect a surrogate marker
for bone microarchitecture status present in the fingernail. The BQT® may
be an accurate predictor of bone fracture risk.
The BQT® is
a significant breakthrough, measuring bone quality based on bonding
levels in the microarchitecture
of the bone rather than measuring bone mass.
Over 44m people at at risk of bone health problems
in the USA. Treating fractures cost $18 billion in 2002 dollars.
In the UK, osteoporosis affects 1 in 3
women and 1 in 12 men over 50. The cost of care is estimated at £1.7
billion per annum, in the EU the figure is 25 billion Euros.
Osteoporosis is treatable, unfortunately it remains largely under
diagnosed and under treated.
